Weekend Dish: Cancer Support

5.16.2008

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the silver lining in my cloud from yesterday's post about my mammogram scare:

Thank goodness I have:
*health insurance
*the means to pay for health care costs and medication not covered by insurance
*qualified, competent doctors and care givers
*a support network of family and friends.

Many people don't have one or more of those things.

In light of that, I wanted to share a couple links with you this weekend.

Cancer Q&A

You can visit Karen at Simply A Musing Blog and leave any questions you have about cancer in the comments section. She says:

Here's the deal. I have some oncologists in Texas that want you to be informed so badly, they are willing to donate some time to the cause. They are inviting you to a question and answer right here on my blog.

What a great opportunity to ask the experts! Questions will be accepted until 9pm central on Sunday evening.

I also received an email from a reader named Lindsey who is launching a website to raise funds for free mammograms for women who cannot afford them. By purchasing gift cards to a large number of stores you probably shop at already, you can help those less fortunate get the health care they need.

Thank you all very much for your concern, kind words and for sharing your own stories after I wrote my post yesterday.

We really are all in this together. I am blessed by each and every one of you.

Wow,I bet you are thankful for the week to be over. Thats a lot to go through. My grandmother died of breast cancer so I can understand. I have some of the same worries especially about who would take care of my kids and husband if anything were to happen to me. Its just really important to enjoy the here and now.

Karen :

Thanks for helping promote this Q&A. :)

You are so right about God being bigger than any kind of illness we could have. My daughter recently slipped me a little note that said, "Mama, God will take care of us, meaning our family. If you get scared, turn to Psalm 23:1 - "Serve the Lord with fear". I was touched beyond what mere words could describe.

So glad your mammogram was good. Again, thanks for mentioning this. :)

Karen :

Um...i meant to reference TWO Bible quotes there...lol

Psalm 23:1 - "The Lord is my Shepherd" AND Psalm 2:11 "Serve the Lord with fear".

Oh well, chalk it up to a late night. We can do that, right?

Knit-Wit :

God is so good. He made sure all those silver linings were in place at the right moment for you.

Jill - I just read your post about your mammogram scare. I've had one suspicious one, so I can relate to your feelings. I'm so glad that everything turned out OK. The radiologists are so careful, especially with a first scan, as they have nothing with which to compare. They'd rather err on the side of doing too much than not enough.

But it sure can be scary when you're called back for a repeat.

Tricia :

With tears falling in to my Wheates.....so thankful to hear that all is ok with you.....

Tonja :

I know what a scare this was for you. Glad all is well! I have undergone 4 breast biopsies, but all turned out OK. Take care of yourself! Glad to learn of these links, too.

It's wonderful there is so many places to get cancer support.

You might also consider putting a breast cancer site button on your sidebar like I have so you and others and click it daily to provide free mammograms to those who can't afford one.
