Thank Goodness We Don't Need Gasoline to Blog

9.30.2008

If you haven't heard, we're in the middle of a gasoline crisis in the entire metro-Atlanta area.

We're talking crisis as in "most places don't have gas and if they do the line to pump is a mile long."

Crisis as in "you may just be taking your life into your own hands because people without gasoline can get really nasty."

You don't really know how much you rely on something until it costs $4.97 per gallon and is as scarce as a Jerry Springer show without any yelling, cussing or chair-throwing.

And of course this gasoline crisis had to happen mere weeks after I got a gas-guzzling SUV that costs as much to fill each week as a good pair of running shoes.

Which leads me to say that I will not be running more and driving less.

Or running at all for that matter.

I have cut down on the number of errands I do on any given weekend, and any miscellaneous shopping has been stopped. Which has been good for my savings account and not so good for the gross national product of Target Stores, Inc. I am sure they are feeling the pinch since I've stopped dropping cash there.

I hope things are good for all of you - at the gasoline pump and everywhere else.

I may not be coming home to metro Atlanta new week if this whole crazy gas situation does not get better! I am so upset

Tonja :

The whole world has gone crazy! Except for my blogging buddies, of course!

Stacy at Exceedingly Mundane :

I've been reading about this in the paper here. I read that it was not only in the Atlanta area but Nashville and parts of North Carolina too. Which is crazy, because it's not going on here. We had the exact same thing happen after Katrina though, 3 years ago. It went sky high, but we couldn't find it. People would hear that gas was going to be at a certain station, and the lines would form for a mile or two. We waited in several ourselves, because we had people we were trying to get home. It's scary to rely on something so much and not be able to get it.

I'm hoping it dies down soon, or they get those two pipelines pumping faster. I read in today's paper that it takes it 10 days to reach the Atlanta area. Ugh. Hang in there, Target isn't going anywhere!

Melissa @ Breath of Life :

We haven't felt the shortage here in my part of the world YET. I have a SUV, too...and filling it up is crazy. Like you, we've cut out unnecessary errands & shopping. The shopping I've done lately has been online...shipping is cheaper than the gas to go to the mall (40 miles away).

Kelly :

isn't it sad that it is now cheaper t pay shipping on something then it is to drive to the store to buy it in person?
I have often felt the same way, that Target would go under if I did not get my weekly trips, yes I said trips, plural, in. I am sure they will not, but it is nice to think they will miss us.
I hope your gas crisis comes to a quick end and your prices go down too.

Nobody You Know :

Scary scary stuff. Really, I just don't know anymore.

Belle (from Life of a...) :

We thought we weren't going to make it to the football game last weekend. Greenville/Clemson was practically dry too.

Karen :

I'm sorry to hear about the gas woes out there. Out west, the prices are down to $3.47 -- wow:/

I just found your blog, Jill, and it's a nice place! I love the color in your dining room. Do you mind sharing what paint it is and color? The last time I did blue, I just didn't get it right, but don't want to give up.

Tina Leigh :

I'm on vacation for the next 2 weeks and I wanted to go see my Mom in Buchanan and go to Ellijay to the apple orchards...well I'm to scared to do that becasue of the gas. What a bunch of mess this is!!

Lennye :

South of metro Atlanta gas is plentiful at $3.99 per gallon. However, tonight I heard gas was $3.78 per gallon out toward the interstate. So I thought it was worth the short drive. Unfortunately, most pumps were dry. We ended up driving to another station, but folks tempers were very ill.

Like you drive is cut to a minimum. No shopping and only necessary trips. We are trying to plan parent conferences this week and have had some parents say gas is too high to drive over to the school!

Beth :

We've been out of gas for a week or more in Asheville. It's finally gotten a little better here, but there are still stations with no gas at all. Crazy, I tell ya!

The 5 Bickies :

What a pain...sure does change how you look at the usual running around. Hope things straighten out soon!

Tricia :

Hopefully you can get back to shopping soon....for the sake of Target stock!! : )

annie :

I just read my friend ohamanda's blog post about being in labor (in atlanta) and not being able to find gas! yikes. I didn't realize it was such a problem. We aren't experiencing that problem here, gas is 3.12 a gallon and available everywhere. I hope they get the gas supply back where it belongs... soon!

Mom on the Run :

I think it's getting a little better. J1 is still totally out of gas down at Tech, but yesterday I saw at least three station open and only one had long lines. The rest of us have full tanks thanks to DOTR (he's aggressive, yet patient....I'm neither) and he's been walking to work--nine work days in a row now.

Just Mom :

I've been wondering how my blogging friends down south are dealing with the gas shortage.

Yes, thank goodness you don't need gasoline to blog.

CR :

I tell you it's mere chance that I find gas and when you do...step on it! Yesterday I saw a few more stations with it, but also the long line, ugh. I'm hoping by this weekend we'll get back to normal!

The Things We Carried :

I hear you!

The Mrs. :

Wow! I had no idea!

Tammy :

Wow...I hadn't been following the news lately...yikes!

Yep, that would be awful if we had to keep filling up our computers with gas, wouldn't it?

Do you have a bike? I bet everyone who does is sure using them out there!

Hang in there, Jill!
(((HUGS)))

Sandy :

Hi Jill,
I cancelled a trip up there this weekend because of the gas situation ~ crazy. It's even crazier that I'm an hour and half away from you in the same state and we have plenty of gas and it's only $3.63. No rhyme or reason!!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sandy

Darlene :

It's amazing how we don't really know what is happening in other parts of the country. In Texas, we may pay for the gas but we don't have to worry about shortages. At least not yet.

Darlene :

It's amazing how we don't know what is going on in other parts of the country. We may pay for it in Texas, but we don't have to wait in line for it.

Jillian :

Why in your area? We just noticed after being out of the look for a week in the hospital...gas went down to 3.29 here. Have no idea why it is so all over the board around the country. Sounds like gouging????

Hope it gets better!

Jillian

Jillian :

Oops. That was supposed to be "out of the loop". Did I mention I am also "out of sleep?" Tee hee.

Again, hope the gas woes swing the other way for you.
